Bihar Village Courts Dispose Over 2 Lakh Cases, Cite Police Interference
Times of India · india
Bihar's village courts, known as gram kutcheris, have successfully disposed of over 2.25 lakh civil and criminal cases in the past 22 months, achieving an impressive disposal rate of nearly 94%. These courts registered a total of 2,39,986 cases, including 1,30,868 civil and 1,09,118 criminal disputes. Despite this high efficiency, sarpanches and court secretaries highlighted significant challenges, particularly interference from the police and village watchmen, which they stated is undermining the independent functioning of these crucial grassroots judicial bodies.
