India's Fire Regimes Diverging, Eastern Ghats Show Steepest Rise

A new study by the Centre for Wildlife Studies has mapped India's diverging fire regimes, revealing a significant increase in burned areas. Between 2002 and 2022, the Eastern Ghats experienced the steepest rise in burned area at 9.3% annually. This suggests a more fire-prone combination of vegetation, climate, and human ignition in the region compared to the Western Ghats, with Central India falling in between. The research analyzed approximately 20,000 square kilometers of protected forest land across 13 reserves, finding that both human and climate factors contribute to fire activity.
