Germany Town Bans Holocaust Memorial Stones

The German town of Heidenau has banned the installation of new Stolpersteine, or stumbling stones, memorializing Holocaust victims. The decision was made by a joint vote of the center-right CDU party and the far-right AfD. Proponents of the ban argued that the stones, placed near former residences, lead to people walking on victims' names. They suggested alternative memorial locations. Artist Gunter Demnig, who began the project in the 1990s, criticized the ban, stating remembrance should be visible where people lived.
