16-Year-Old Innovator Uses Upcycled Terracotta Cups For Low-Cost Cooling Units

Gurugram student Amaira Kapoor, 16, developed Project Vaayu to create affordable cooling systems for under-resourced classrooms. Inspired by the 2024 North India heatwave and the disparity in educational facilities, she uses discarded terracotta tea cups, known as kulhads, for evaporative cooling. Field tests in government schools showed temperature reductions of 6°C to 10°C with minimal electricity usage. Kapoor refined the design using an iron framework and silica sealant for durability, making it suitable for regular school use. The initiative addresses both the need for accessible cooling and material reuse.
