The Madras High Court has declared the term 'homemaker' to be gender-neutral, stating that both earning for a family and managing domestic life deserve equal respect. Justices G.R. Swaminathan and M.D. Sumathi observed that if 'housewives' exist, 'house husbands' can too, as homemaking is a role, not tied to gender. This observation acknowledges the economic value of domestic work, previously recognized by the Supreme Court. The court emphasized that a home is built by those who take responsibility, regardless of gender, allowing for diverse family arrangements.
