India Asks Meta To Prevent Algorithms Amplifying Limited Narratives Amid Protests

The Indian government has urged Meta to ensure its social media algorithms do not disproportionately amplify single or limited narratives. The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, also requests monitoring of posts that could incite public disorder or violence. This directive comes amid protests in New Delhi concerning the Chief Election Commissioner and the electoral roll revision process. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, was asked to provide context for content depicting ongoing public events.

भारत सरकार ने मेटा से कहा है कि वह सुनिश्चित करे कि उसके सोशल मीडिया एल्गोरिदम एक या कुछ सीमित कहानियों को ज़्यादा बढ़ावा न दें। इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स और सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी मंत्रालय द्वारा जारी इस सलाह में यह भी कहा गया है कि ऐसे पोस्ट पर नज़र रखी जाए जिनसे सार्वजनिक अव्यवस्था या हिंसा भड़क सकती है। यह निर्देश नई दिल्ली में मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्त और चुनावी रोल संशोधन प्रक्रिया को लेकर चल रहे विरोध प्रदर्शनों के बीच आया है। फेसबुक और इंस्टाग्राम के मालिक मेटा से कहा गया है कि वह चल रही सार्वजनिक घटनाओं को दर्शाने वाली सामग्री के लिए संदर्भ प्रदान करे।
