Ontario Man Denied US Cancer Treatment Wins Court Battle, Province Changes Rules
Times of India · health
An Ontario man with Stage 4 melanoma, Alex Shved, successfully challenged the province in court after the Ontario Health Insurance Plan denied funding for potentially life-saving tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy in Florida. The court ordered OHIP to reconsider his application, finding the initial rejection lacked sufficient basis. However, following the ruling, Ontario amended its regulations for out-of-country drug funding, now only covering treatments already publicly funded in Ontario. Shved expressed disappointment, stating the government changed the law to legitimize its previous actions.
