India's RTE Act Promises Free Education, But Implementation Falls Short

TV9 Hindi · education

RTE Act, passed in 2009, guarantees free primary education for children aged six to 14, placing responsibility on the state. A key provision mandates private schools reserve 25% of entry-level seats for economically weaker children, with government reimbursement. However, implementation faces significant challenges. Many schools deny admission on technicalities, and enforcement varies greatly by state, with some showing very low compliance rates. This leaves many families unable to access the education promised by the law.
