96% of World's Coral Reefs Face Critical Risk of Collapse
DW World · world
A new study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) warns that 96% of the world's shallow-water coral reefs are critically endangered and face a high risk of collapse by 2075. Climate change, primarily driven by heat stress, is identified as the single most consistent threat causing coral reef decline worldwide. Other significant factors contributing to reef degradation include overfishing, coastal development, pollution, tourism, and increasingly severe storms. The loss of these vital ecosystems threatens biodiversity and the species they support.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
