Velachery Floods Persist Despite 90% Stormwater Drain Coverage

TOI - Delhi · india

Chennai's Velachery faces annual monsoon floods despite significant investment in stormwater drains, with over ₹47.5 crore spent on covering 32.6 km of roads. The low-lying area's inundation is attributed to clogged drains from illegal sewage connections, neglect of the Veerangal Odai natural waterway, and the shrinking Velachery lake. These issues collectively undermine flood mitigation efforts for the over two lakh residents. Experts emphasize the need for a comprehensive plan addressing drainage maintenance, sewage management, and waterway restoration to prevent recurring waterlogging.
