India has officially joined the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA), granting it access to valuable marine resources and enhancing its influence in international fisheries governance. This move allows Indian vessels to fish for species like squid and toothfish beyond India's exclusive economic zone. SIOFA, established in 2006, provides a framework for managing fisheries in the region, with India now joining ten other contracting parties. The agreement excludes highly migratory species, which are managed by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, where India is already a member.
