Teacher Preserved Heirloom Pumpkin For 40 Years

A Pennsylvania teacher, Wayne Fortna, preserved a family heirloom pumpkin for nearly 40 years, known today as the ‘Fortna White’ pumpkin. This cream-coloured squash, traditionally used for Thanksgiving pie, was stewarded by Fortna after serving as a tank commander in World War II. Following his death in 1990, his daughter ensured the seeds were saved by the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum.
