Ontario is permanently protecting 969 acres of land at Echo Lake, establishing the Paswe Protected Area. This initiative is a partnership between Garden River First Nation, the Central Algoma Land Trust, and Ontario Nature. The land, historically part of the First Nation's reserve, will be returned to their stewardship within five years. This area is a critical wildlife corridor, home to over 400 documented species, and will be managed by the First Nation's Guardian Unit. The goal is to combine conservation efforts with cultural responsibilities and traditional harvesting.
