El Niño, High Crude Prices May Keep India's Inflation Elevated

Times of India · business

India's retail inflation in September met RBI projections, but El Niño and high global crude oil prices could prolong pressure on food and fuel costs. Economist Debopam Chaudhuri noted the current El Niño is severe, potentially impacting crop output and keeping food inflation high. Elevated crude prices are increasing India's import bill and imported inflation. Businesses may pass on higher input costs, sustaining inflationary pressures across the economy. Rural consumption is expected to face greater pressure than urban spending due to inflation's differential impact.
