Macquarie Island Seabirds Return After Invasive Species Eradication
Hindustan Times · environment
Blue petrels are returning to Macquarie Island, an Australian territory, after invasive predators like cats, rabbits, and rodents were removed. Cats were eradicated by 2000, and rabbits and rodents by 2014. A 2024 study estimated blue petrel populations grew by about 14% annually following the initial cat removal. Researchers observed approximately 5,588 breeding pairs in 2018, a significant increase from the 500-600 pairs estimated in 1999. This recovery demonstrates how removing introduced animals can improve conditions for native wildlife.
