Adelaide Zoo Celebrates First Cassowary Egg in 34 Years
Hindustan Times · good-news
Adelaide Zoo in Australia is celebrating a significant event: the hatching of its first Southern cassowary egg in 34 years. The rare, bright green egg, laid by 10-year-old Martina and 13-year-old Jeffrey, is a neon jewel due to the biliverdin pigment. This pigment aids in camouflage within dense rainforests, helping to protect the eggs from predators. Cassowary eggs are large, weighing around 580 grams, and it is the male bird's responsibility to incubate them and raise the chicks after the female lays them.
