SC Discourages Weaponisation of Rape Law in Sour Relationships

Times of India · top

The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the trend of invoking rape laws against men after consensual romantic relationships end. A bench stated that the legislature never intended consensual sexual acts between adults to be criminalised retrospectively simply because a relationship dissolved. The court noted that this trend is increasing and often involves monetary settlements. It warned that such an approach risks undermining the gravity of rape charges and denudes men of agency, potentially leading to false accusations.
