Albania Protests Turn Violent PM Edi Rama's Rule Threatened

India Today · world

Albania's capital, Tirana, is at a standstill as student-led protests against education costs and poor university conditions have escalated into violent anti-government demonstrations. The unrest, now in its sixth day, has broadened to include public anger over corruption, unemployment, and the high cost of living, with protesters demanding Prime Minister Edi Rama's resignation. Clashes with riot police, burning buildings, and arrests have marked the demonstrations, which have also been fueled by opposition to a proposed luxury tourism development. Rama insists the unrest threatens Albania's EU ambitions more than his government.
