Beavers to Return to Loch Ness After 500 Years With Official Reintroduction Approval

Times of India · environment

Conservation groups have received approval to reintroduce up to 15 family groups of beavers to the Loch Ness catchment area in the Scottish Highlands. This marks the first return of beavers in nearly 500 years, following their extinction in Scotland during the 16th century. The Ness Beaver Project, led by Trees for Life and the Beaver Trust, will begin releasing beavers within weeks. The project aims to restore natural wetlands, improve water quality, and create new habitats, aligning with Scotland's broader beaver reintroduction strategy.
