Super El Niño Threatens Coral Reefs With Extinction As Ocean Temperatures Soar
TOI Environment · environment
A potentially record-breaking super El Niño event could push the world's coral reefs closer to extinction due to unprecedented ocean temperature increases, warns David Obura, chair of the UN's expert scientific panel on biodiversity. Corals are highly sensitive to heat, and climate change is already warming oceans and intensifying bleaching events. This El Niño phenomenon adds significant risk, potentially leading to the extinction of some coral species. A 2020 reassessment found nearly half of coral species already faced elevated extinction risk, primarily driven by climate change.
