The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed increasing charges for public toilets in Mumbai. Urinals, currently free, may cost ₹1, while washroom fees could rise from ₹2 to ₹5, and bathing facilities from ₹5 to ₹10. This proposal aims to help private operators cover escalating maintenance and operational expenses, including cleaning and repairs. The BMC stated that the additional revenue would be retained by the managing agencies. Activists have raised concerns about the affordability of these essential sanitation facilities, especially for economically weaker sections of the population.
