El Niño May Cause Warmer Winters in India, Threatening Wheat Crop

Aaj Tak · environment

The El Niño phenomenon is raising concerns about India's winter weather, with predictions of warmer temperatures potentially impacting agriculture. Following a 13% deficit in monsoon rainfall, the WMO forecasts El Niño's strength to persist until late 2026 and into 2027. This could lead to higher-than-normal temperatures in parts of India, straining water availability for irrigation and crops. A significant worry is the wheat harvest, as increased heat during the grain-filling stage in January and February 2027 could reduce yields.
