UPI to Introduce Merchant Fees From October 2026

UPI will introduce a new pricing phase from October 15, 2026, with select person-to-merchant transactions above Rs 2,000 attracting a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR). The Finance Ministry clarified that customers will not pay this fee directly, and it won't apply to person-to-person transfers or small merchants. This move aims to create revenue for banks and payment companies supporting the network, which processed nearly Rs 29.8 lakh crore in August.

अक्टूबर 2026 से UPI में नया नियम लागू होगा। 2,000 रुपये से ज़्यादा के कुछ मर्चेंट ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर MDR लगेगा। फाइनेंस मिनिस्ट्री ने साफ किया है कि ग्राहकों को ये पैसे नहीं देने होंगे। ये नियम आम लोगों के बीच पैसे भेजने या छोटे व्यापारियों पर लागू नहीं होगा। इससे बैंकों और पेमेंट कंपनियों को कमाई होगी, जो UPI नेटवर्क को सपोर्ट करते हैं। अगस्त में UPI से करीब 29.8 लाख करोड़ रुपये का ट्रांज़ैक्शन हुआ था।
