Govt Extends Agniveer Service to 6 Years, Opens Path for Regular Soldier Absorption

Times of India · politics

The Indian government has significantly overhauled the Agnipath scheme, extending the service tenure for Agniveers from four to six years and opening a pathway for their absorption as regular soldiers. This decision aims to create a younger, fitter, and future-ready military, addressing concerns about the initial short-term recruitment policy. The move will benefit approximately three lakh Agniveers, including the first batch completing their tenure by year-end. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated this reform is crucial for adapting India's defence forces to the changing nature of warfare.
