Court Mandates User Notification for Social Media Takedown Orders
Hindustan Times · technology
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that users must be notified when their social media posts, pages, or accounts are ordered for takedown by the government. Previously, users often discovered content removal only after it disappeared, without seeing the official order. The court specified that copies of takedown orders must be sent to the affected user simultaneously with the platform. This ruling addresses transparency concerns surrounding government content removal procedures under the IT Act, particularly Section 69A and Rule 3(1)(d) of the IT Rules.
