Historically, western neuroscience viewed only human minds as certainly conscious, meeting claims of animal consciousness with skepticism. However, a paradigm shift has occurred, with the 2024 New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness recognizing strong scientific support for consciousness in mammals and birds. It also acknowledges the realistic possibility of consciousness in other vertebrates, cephalopods, crustaceans, and insects, a notion considered heresy just thirty years ago.
