India Lacks Accurate Stroke Death Data, Hindering Prevention Efforts
Hindustan Times · health
India struggles to accurately count stroke deaths, a critical gap for public health initiatives. While official reports in 2024 recorded only 86,300 cerebrovascular deaths, estimates suggest the actual toll could be around 0.4 million annually. A significant challenge is the low rate of medically certified causes of death, with nearly 69 lakh deaths going uncertified in 2024. Furthermore, existing certifications often record symptoms like 'cardiopulmonary arrest' instead of the underlying cause, obscuring the true impact of conditions like stroke.
