Police detained over 100 protesters in Chennai and Coimbatore on Sunday during black flag demonstrations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Tamil Nadu. Youth and student organizations, including DYFI and SFI, demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and accused the BJP-led Union government of acting against state interests. Protesters also condemned alleged police excesses and policies detrimental to Tamil Nadu, its people, and language. The May 17 Movement specifically criticized the Union government for withholding funds and promoting Hindi over Tamil.
