New York City has imposed a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for pupils up to eighth grade, affecting nearly 600,000 students. Companion chatbots are prohibited, and AI components in approved programs failing new standards will be disabled. Teachers can still use AI for planning, and assistive technologies for students with disabilities remain permitted. Five limited AI pilots will run in high school classrooms, alongside mandatory modules on AI risks for all high schoolers. Tighter screen time limits are also introduced for younger grades.
