Indian Election Officials Face Pressure to Clear Voter Notices Without Hearings
The Hindu · india
Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) in India allege they are facing immense pressure to complete voter list revision hearings before the deadline, even without conducting actual hearings. Officials are reportedly instructing AEROs to upload any submitted documents, like Aadhaar or PAN cards, to avoid automatic deletion applications. As of October 5, over 7.82 lakh hearings were pending statewide, with more than 4.24 lakh in Bengaluru alone. This pressure is reportedly leading to questionable verification practices and the inclusion of voters not found at listed addresses.
