Apple CEO John Ternus has quietly assumed the role of design chief, a position vacant since Jony Ive's 2019 departure. Ternus now oversees both hardware industrial design and software human interface teams, working hands-on in the design studio multiple times weekly. This contrasts sharply with his predecessor Tim Cook, who spent minimal time on design. Ternus, a hardware engineer, is prioritizing rebuilding the design team, which saw key departures after Ive's exit. Apple is not seeking an external chief design officer, placing Ternus as the ultimate arbiter of product aesthetics.
