India's Urbanisation Outpacing Governance, Demanding New Approaches

Hindustan Times · india

India's urbanisation is rapidly expanding beyond official city limits into surrounding villages and industrial corridors, creating settlements that are economically integrated but lack adequate governance. Peripheral areas accounted for over 80% of built-up growth in major cities between 2000 and 2020, with Census Towns increasing significantly. This pattern creates a mismatch between growth geography and governance, straining infrastructure and services. The Union Budget 2026-27 and the Sixteenth Finance Commission's recommendations highlight the need for integrated regional development and incentivising the merger of peri-urban areas to address these challenges.
