Weak Monsoon Hits Rural Demand, Leading to Significant Drop in Tractor Sales
Business Standard · business
India experienced its weakest monsoon in over a decade, significantly impacting rural spending and leading to a drop in tractor and two-wheeler sales in September. Major tractor manufacturers like Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 21% decrease, while Escorts Kubota saw a 16.7% decline. This slowdown is attributed to patchy rainfall, reduced crop sowing, lower farm incomes, and increased rural indebtedness. While passenger vehicle demand remained strong due to urban consumers and the upcoming festive season, the agrarian economy's weakness is evident in sectors tied to rural demand.
