Govt Curbs Sugar Diversion For Ethanol, Mills Warn of Losses

Mint · business

The Indian government has decided to prioritize grain-based ethanol for its petrol blending program, excluding sugarcane juice, sugar syrup, and B-heavy molasses from procurement tenders for the 2026-27 supply year. This move aims to boost sugar production amid declining sugarcane acreage and concerns about potential price rises. Sugar mills are urging the government to reconsider, warning that this exclusion could lead to significant financial losses when sugar production increases and prices fall. The tender seeks approximately 11 billion litres of ethanol, allowing only maize, broken rice, and C-heavy molasses-based ethanol.
