Fishermen Protest Secretariat Proposal At Foreshore Estate

Hundreds of fishermen and women from 64 villages protested a government proposal to build a new Secretariat at Foreshore Estate. Community leaders expressed hope that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay would withdraw the order, citing concerns over their livelihoods and freedom to fish. They also demanded the return of lands previously used by fishermen, which have since been converted into government staff housing. Some leaders also called for the demolition and reconstruction of old slum clearance board tenements.
