Scientists on NOAA's Voyage to the Ridge 2022 expedition have discovered mysterious lines of holes in the Pacific seafloor sediment, with their origin remaining unknown. Observations were made at depths between 1,440 and 2,540 metres, showing raised sediment piles suggesting excavation. Attempts to examine the holes with a remotely operated vehicle and analyze sediment samples yielded no clues. Similar formations were documented on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in 2004, with researchers suggesting biological excavation, but the cause remains an unresolved deep-sea mystery.
