Five Infections Linked to Higher Cancer Risk

A new study reveals that approximately 2.3 million cancer cases globally in 2024 were linked to infections, with one in eight cancers having an infectious origin. Researchers identified five key infections: H. pylori, HPV, Hepatitis B virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and Hepatitis C virus. H. pylori was associated with the most cases, around 7.6 lakh, followed closely by HPV with 7.5 lakh cases. These findings highlight the significant role infections play in cancer development, particularly in low and middle-income countries where three-quarters of these cases occurred.
