Fort Cronkhite, an abandoned World War II mobilization site near San Francisco, has been preserved as a historic site within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Originally built to house troops and artillery, including two 16-inch guns at Battery Townsley capable of breaking windows across the city during testing, the fort guarded the San Francisco Bay entrance. After the war, most temporary military structures were demolished, but Fort Cronkhite's barracks and Battery Townsley remain.
