SC asks TN govt to find alternative site

The Supreme Court has urged the Tamil Nadu government to consider identifying an alternative site for its proposed open-air jail instead of evicting SASTRA University from land it allegedly encroached upon. A bench noted the land serves a public educational purpose and questioned the state's "obstinate" stance on demolition. The court suggested the university could bear the cost of a new site identified by the government, emphasizing the importance of educational institutions.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने तमिलनाडु सरकार से कहा है कि वह अपनी प्रस्तावित खुली जेल के लिए कोई दूसरी जगह देखे, बजाय इसके कि SASTRA यूनिवर्सिटी को उस ज़मीन से हटाए जिस पर कथित तौर पर अतिक्रमण हुआ है। कोर्ट ने कहा कि वह ज़मीन शिक्षा के सार्वजनिक काम आ रही है और सरकार के ज़िद पर सवाल उठाया। कोर्ट ने सुझाव दिया कि सरकार नई जगह ढूंढे और उसका खर्च यूनिवर्सिटी उठाए, क्योंकि शैक्षणिक संस्थानों का महत्व बहुत है।
