Business Standard · business
Sugar prices have increased by more than Rs 4 per kg in both retail and wholesale markets over the past month, reaching Rs 59.50 per kg and Rs 55.40 per kg respectively. This surge occurs despite government measures to boost supplies for the festival season. Year-on-year, prices are up significantly, with Kolkata and Delhi reporting the highest retail rates among metros. Factors contributing to the elevated prices include lower-than-expected production for 2025-26, festive demand, crop damage, and tighter global supplies.
