A cardiologist has warned that thickened heart muscles, sometimes seen in athletes, could be a sign of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a dangerous condition. HCM is a disease where the heart muscle thickens, potentially obstructing blood flow and causing arrhythmias. A heart muscle thickness of 15 millimetres or greater without a clear explanation, like uncontrolled hypertension, can indicate HCM. This condition often runs in families and requires genetic evaluation, though a negative test doesn't rule it out. While many with HCM can live full lives, they need individualised risk assessment.
