India Must Lead Global Debate On Lethal Autonomous Weapons
Hindustan Times · technology
The US decision to allow development of lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS) and its actions in space set concerning precedents. Historically, technological advancements in warfare have outpaced legal and moral restraints, eroding distinctions between combatants and civilians. AI now poses a greater risk by enabling machines to make lethal decisions, bypassing human judgment and moral restraint. The international community faces this challenge at the upcoming CCW review conference in Geneva, where consensus on a legally binding treaty for LAWS remains elusive.
