Road Agencies Penalised Zero Despite 1.77 Lakh Accidents

In the last five years, 1.77 lakh accidents in India have been attributed to poor road conditions and potholes. Despite a law introduced in 2019 to hold agencies accountable for faulty road design and maintenance, no road agency has been penalised under Section 198A. Proving a direct link between road engineering flaws and accidents remains a significant challenge for authorities. Recently, penalties under this section have been increased to ₹50 lakh, with new provisions allowing administrative bodies to impose fines.

पिछले पांच सालों में भारत में 1.77 लाख से ज़्यादा हादसे खराब सड़क की हालत और गड्ढों की वजह से हुए हैं। साल 2019 में एजेंसियों को खराब सड़क डिजाइन और रखरखाव के लिए जवाबदेह ठहराने का कानून आने के बावजूद, सेक्शन 198A के तहत किसी भी सड़क एजेंसी पर कोई जुर्माना नहीं लगाया गया है। अधिकारियों के लिए सड़क इंजीनियरिंग की खामियों और हादसों के बीच सीधा संबंध साबित करना एक बड़ी चुनौती बनी हुई है। हाल ही में, इस सेक्शन के तहत जुर्माने को बढ़ाकर ₹50 लाख कर दिया गया है, और नए प्रावधानों से प्रशासनिक निकायों को जुर्माना लगाने की अनुमति मिल गई है।
