Quitting Smoking Reduces Lung Cancer Risk Over Time, Says Surgeon
HT - Lifestyle · lifestyle
Quitting smoking significantly reduces the risk of lung cancer over time, even after years of tobacco use, according to thoracic surgical oncologist Dr. Jitesh Rajpurohit. While quitting does not erase past exposure, it stops ongoing damage, allowing the lungs an opportunity to heal. Health benefits begin almost immediately, with lung function and circulation improving within weeks. After 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is halved compared to continuing smokers, though former smokers should still attend regular check-ups.
