Social Media Platforms Must Prevent Online Harm, Says IT Minister Vaishnaw

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has placed the responsibility on social media platforms to proactively prevent online harm and ensure user safety. He emphasized greater accountability for child and women's safety, algorithmic transparency, and grievance redressal. Vaishnaw stated that platforms can no longer act as passive intermediaries and must take responsibility for harmful content, including cyber fraud and digital arrest scams. However, he did not specify if this increased responsibility would affect their legal safe-harbour protections under the IT Act.

केंद्रीय आईटी मंत्री अश्विनी वैष्णव ने सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्मों पर ऑनलाइन नुकसान को सक्रिय रूप से रोकने और उपयोगकर्ता की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने की जिम्मेदारी डाली है। उन्होंने बच्चों और महिलाओं की सुरक्षा, एल्गोरिथम पारदर्शिता और शिकायत निवारण के लिए अधिक जवाबदेही पर जोर दिया। वैष्णव ने कहा कि प्लेटफॉर्म अब निष्क्रिय मध्यस्थ के रूप में कार्य नहीं कर सकते हैं और उन्हें साइबर धोखाधड़ी और डिजिटल गिरफ्तारी घोटालों सहित हानिकारक सामग्री के लिए जिम्मेदारी लेनी होगी। हालांकि, उन्होंने यह निर्दिष्ट नहीं किया कि क्या इस बढ़ी हुई जिम्मेदारी का आईटी अधिनियम के तहत उनकी कानूनी सुरक्षित-बंदरगाह सुरक्षा पर कोई प्रभाव पड़ेगा।
