Japan PM-backed Candidate Wins Okinawa Governor Election

Genta Koja, backed by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's party, has won the Okinawa gubernatorial election, defeating incumbent Denny Tamaki. Koja secured 59 percent of the vote, potentially ending over a decade of opposition to a US military build-up in the region. The 42-year-old will be the youngest governor since Okinawa's return to Japan in 1972. His victory could facilitate the relocation of US Marines and expand military access to civilian facilities.
