Psychiatry Meet Flags Stigma, Doctor Shortage in India

Experts at the 47th annual conference of the central psychiatric society in Raipur highlighted stigma and a shortage of psychiatrists as major barriers to mental healthcare in India. The conference, themed "from foundations to frontiers: psychiatry in the current era," discussed newer treatments and emerging tools like AI. Senior psychiatrist Dr Ashok Trivedi was honored for his service, having worked in Bhilai-Durg when services were limited to big cities. Experts noted that stigma often delays treatment, with families sometimes seeking faith healers first.

रायपुर में सेंट्रल साइकियाट्रिक सोसाइटी के 47वें वार्षिक सम्मेलन में विशेषज्ञों ने भारत में मानसिक स्वास्थ्य देखभाल के रास्ते में कलंक और मनोचिकित्सकों की कमी को बड़ी बाधा बताया। 'वर्तमान युग में नींव से लेकर सीमाओं तक: मनोचिकित्सा' थीम वाले इस सम्मेलन में नए उपचारों और AI जैसे उभरते उपकरणों पर चर्चा हुई। वरिष्ठ मनोचिकित्सक डॉ अशोक त्रिवेदी को उनकी सेवा के लिए सम्मानित किया गया, जिन्होंने भिलाई-दुर्ग में तब काम किया था जब सेवाएं केवल बड़े शहरों तक सीमित थीं। विशेषज्ञों ने बताया कि कलंक के कारण अक्सर इलाज में देरी होती है, और परिवार कभी-कभी पहले झाड़-फूंक करने वालों के पास जाते हैं।
