Seventeen-year-old Delhi student Mahi Malhani developed TRASHbot, an AI-powered robot designed to detect, collect, and sort waste, inspired by observing litter near bins during a 2023 school trip. The robot utilizes a camera and YOLOv3 AI model to identify waste, classifying it into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories with nearly 90% sorting accuracy. TRASHbot, which also avoids obstacles using ultrasonic sensors, is currently undergoing testing in homes, schools, and residential communities.
