Karnataka Flags Massive Markup on High-Cost Drugs, Seeks Centre's Intervention
The Hindu · india
Karnataka has alerted the Union government to significant markups on high-cost medicines, cancer drugs, and consumables supplied to hospitals. Investigations revealed pharmaceutical companies sell medicines to hospitals at heavily discounted institutional prices, while patients are billed near the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). This results in markups ranging from 10 to over 52 times the procurement cost. The state has urged the Centre to mandate transparency in pricing, display landing costs and MRP on bills, and expand price controls on essential medicines.
