Only 6 of 1990's Sensex Stocks Have Survived, Says S Naren

S Naren, Chief Investment Officer at ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, highlighted the risk of individual stock investing at the ET Wealth Expo. He noted that out of the 1990 Sensex constituents, only six companies, Tata Steel, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance Industries, Larsen & Toubro, Wipro, and ITC, remain in the index today. This demonstrates the difficulty in identifying long-term stock market winners and underscores the importance of asset allocation over stock selection. Naren cautioned against assuming beaten-down stocks will always recover, as companies can lose relevance or cease to exist.
